The Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures of the University
of Pittsburgh seeks applications for the position of Lecturer of
Korean, pending budgetary approval. This is a non-tenure track position
and renewable with successful performance review. The ideal candidate
will have a recent PhD (or be an ABD) in the relevant area of expertise,
such as Korean linguistics, Korean language pedagogy, foreign language
teaching, second language acquisition, etc. and have at least three
years of teaching experience at the college level in North America. The
start date for this position is August 25, 2013. The successful
candidate may have a record of research, which is welcome especially if
it deals with aspects of teaching Korean as a foreign language, although
the candidate need not have an active research agenda. The candidate
should subscribe to outcome-based language training, where students’
competence is quantified through a national benchmark. The candidate
should have near-native or native ability in all skill areas (writing,
reading, speaking, and listening) in Korean and English, as well as
cultural competency. The candidate should possess good interpersonal
skills and promote Korean studies energetically.
The University of Pittsburgh has dedicated substantial resources to
international studies and encourages interdisciplinary research and
teaching through the established programs in Cultural Studies, Women’s
Studies, Global Studies, and Film Studies. The East Asian Library is one
of the best in the nation, and there are superlative research
facilities, as well as funds for research and teaching.
