 NFMLTA/NCOLCTL Graduate Students Research Support Award

NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS

DEADLINE October 1st, 2024
Instituted in 2014 by the NFMLTA and the National Council of Less Commonly Taught Languages (NCOLCTL), this award supports graduate student research in the fields of applied linguistics and language education with small grants focused on the teaching and learning of less commonly taught languages (all languages except English, Spanish, French, and German). The grants provide resources at any stage of dissertation writing, e.g., data gathering, data transcription, data analysis, or write-up of the findings.

Awards in the amount of $2,500 each will be made.

Applicants must show evidence that they have defended their dissertation proposal and are at the dissertation research stage. This award is not for the pre-proposal defense stage. To further clarify the eligibility criteria, please note that the award is intended for students who are actively pursuing their research and will utilize the grant funds towards their ongoing dissertation research activities. Additionally, applicants who have already won any NFMLTA Graduation Dissertation award or are scheduled to graduate in the fall of 2024 or spring of 2025 are not eligible to apply for this award.

Awardees are expected to be members of NCOLCTL. The awards will be given at the Awards Ceremony during the annual NCOLCTL conference in April. Awardees are required to register for and attend this conference in order to receive their award.

A complete application includes:
  • A two-page (500-word) application letter detailing the research and how the award will be used towards the research
  • A two-page (500-word) curriculum vitae attachment
  • (Maximum two pages, single-spaced, Times New Roman 12)
Proposals will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
  • Goals of the study and scope
  • Theoretical framework(s) and research question(s)
  • Research Methodology
  • Significance of the study and its limitations
  • Career impact and use of funding


We would encourage you to submit your proposal for the 2025 NCOLCTL Annual Conference too especially before the end of August. We would give priority to the graduate student's proposal and give the decision before September so that you could apply for the NFMLTA/MLJ CONFERENCE PRESENTATION SUPPORT GRANTS FOR LANGUAGE PROFESSIONALS.
