We are delighted to announce the “International Academic Conference on the Compilation of Korean- English Encyclopedia of Korean Culture” scheduled to take place on April 24th, 2024. This conference aims to evaluate the efforts undertaken by the Korean Culture Encyclopedia compilation team over the past three years and to share its achievements with national and international scholars and graduate students in the field of Korean studies, as well as with general readers.

The Compilation of Korean-English Encyclopedia of Korean Culture, led by Dr. Jeonghee Ko (Seoul National University), commenced in June 2021 with the support of The Academy of Korean Studies. The project's objective is to compile a comprehensive and systematic Korean cultural dictionary that encompasses fundamental and essential knowledge across six areas: 'Language and Literature,' 'History and Geography,' 'Life and Science,' 'Society and Philosophy,' 'Art and Architecture,' and 'Performance and Video.' A total of 500 entries were selected, each accompanied by detailed explanations.

Under the guidance of Seoul National University, 46 Korean scholars have authored the manuscripts in Korean. Meanwhile, several graduate students in the department of East Asian Languages and Literatures at the University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM) conducted the English translations of these entry words under the supervision of Dr. Mee-Jeong Park (UHM).

We anticipate that this project will provide comprehensive resources for learners and educators interested in Korean culture, while also offering general readers a systematic understanding through concise yet essential descriptions in dictionary format.

We cordially invite you to the conference to provide your valuable feedback and suggestions on the results of this project and the direction for future publications.UHM-SNU Conference_short
