Dear colleagues,

The Institute for Korean Studies at Penn State is hosting the 3rd Penn State Korean Applied Linguistics Symposium on Friday, February 16, 2024 from 6:00 - 9:00 pm (EST) via Zoom.

Different from previous years, this will be a single-evening event that features innovative approaches to the assessment of oral communication by two front-runners in the field:  Dr. Sahie Kang (Director, School of Korean, Middlebury College) and Dr. Sun-Young Shin (Associate Professor, Second Language Studies, Indiana University).

Beyond grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary—Cutting-edge perspectives, practices, paradigms, tools, scales, and theories in assessing Korean learners’ performance and interactional competence

Friday, February 16, 2024 6:00 - 9:00 pm (EST)

This symposium provides insights, practices, and evidence-based research that push the paradigms of oral proficiency and interactional competence beyond our current understandings and practices into new and more complex territory enabling researchers and educators to more accurately and more complexly assess L2 oral performance and competence. Abstract of each presentation is attached.

Dr. Sahie Kang: Gauging Improvement in Linguistic Elements with Integrated Performance Assessment (see abstract)

Dr. Sun-Young Shin: Assessing L2 Interactional Competence (see abstract)

Registration is free but registration is required. Link:
