Redefining the Field: Envisioning Future Directions for Korean Language Educators 


Professionalization in the field of language education involves the development of professional skills, identities, norms, and values associated with the process of becoming an active member of a “community of practice” (Lave & Wenger, 1991) as a language teacher and/or a researcher. Professional development is often achieved at a personal level by keeping oneself abreast of current language teaching and learning theories. At the same time, we establish and shape our identities, norms, and values as language educators through a socialization process within this “community of practice,” which includes the academic or instructional unit in the institution as well as local and global professional communities at large.

Marking and celebrating its quarter-century anniversary, the 25th Annual Conference and Professional Development Workshop of AATK focuses on the effective and continued professional development and training of Korean language educators. More specifically, the discussions may involve: developing professional outlooks as K-16 teachers; strengthening professional profiles; finding advancement opportunities for progressive career paths; keeping up-to-date on the latest theories in SLA and foreign language pedagogy; increasing research and publication opportunities; networking and exercising membership at various levels of professional communities; creating standardized and fair hiring and review practices to maintain long-term, stable faculty positions to consolidate and expand Korean programs within institutions.


The potential presentation topics may include, but not be limited to:

  • Teacher training curriculum
  • Graduate student training
  • Standardized faculty professional conduct
  • Connecting language education with Korean Studies
  • Finding faculty funding and research opportunities
  • Showcasing best practices in creating:
    • teacher evaluation
    • new faculty position(s)
    • faculty advancement opportunities
    • stronger professional profile
    • regional faculty professional circles
    • a major, minor, and/or certificate in Korean


We encourage submissions of workshop proposals and conference abstracts that address various aspects of professional development in the field of Korean language education. We also welcome the proposals and abstracts that discuss other aspects of learning and teaching of the Korean language outside of this year’s theme. We particularly would like to see more K-12 educators submit their abstracts and plan to reserve at least one workshop session for K-12 participants. There will also be special awards to graduate students who present excellent conference papers.



전문적 역량 강화 – 한국어 교육자들의 미래를 위한 방향성 탐색


언어교육 분야의 전문적 역량 강화는 전문적 기술정체성표준규범가치 등의 개발이 포함되며이에는 실무적 공동체’(Lave & Wenger, 1991)에 언어 교사나 연구자로서 적극적으로 참여하는 과정이 수반됩니다우선 전문적 기술과 지식의 개발은 주로 현재의 언어 교육 및 학습 이론의 흐름에 발맞춰 가려는 개인의 노력을 통해 성취됩니다또한 언어 교육자로서의 정체성규범가치 등은 지역적 혹은 보다 광범위한 전문가 집단 뿐 아니라 기관내 교육적 학문적 소단위를 아우르는 실무적 공동체 내에서의 사회화 과정을 통해서 형성됩니다.


학회의 사반세기를 기념하면서이번 북미한국어교육학회의 제 25차 학술대회는 효과적이고 지속적인 교육자 전문성 개발과 훈련에 초점을 맞추고자 합니다구체적인 내용은 다음과 같습니다초중고와 대학교 (K-16) 교사로서의 전문성 개발전문적 자질과 역량 강화경력과 진로의 지속적 발전 기회 모색2언어습득 및 외국어 교육학에서의 최신 이론 습득연구와 출판 기회 확대다양한 층위의 전문가 공동체에서의 교류 및 활동각 기관 내 한국어 프로그램 강화 및 확장과 연계하여 장기적이고 안정적인 교수 직위 유지를 위한 표준화되고 공정한 채용 및 심사 방식 창출 


생각해 볼 수 있는 발표 주제들은 다음과 같으며다른 주제들 또한 제출 가능합니다:

  • 교사 교육 커리큘럼
  • 대학원생 교육
  • 표준화된 전문적 교수 품행과 수행
  • 언어 교육과 한국학 간의 연계
  • 교원의 각종 기금 및 연구 기회 모색
  • 다음과 같은 내용에 대한 우수 사례 발표
    • 교사 평가 개발
    • 신규 교수직 창출
    • 교수직 승진 기회 창출
    • 전문가적 프로필 형성과 강화
    • 지역 차원의 교수/전문가  지지 집단 형성
    • 한국어 전공/부전공/수료과정 개설


선정된 학회 주제뿐만 아니라 한국어 교육과 학습 전반에 걸친 다른 주제들과 관련된 발표 신청을 통해 적극적으로 학회에 참여해 주십시오특히 초중고교 선생님들의 적극적인 참여를 위해 최소한 1 개의 워크샵 발표 일정을 준비해 놓았습니다또한 우수 발표 대학원생들을 위한 특별상도 따로 마련되어 있습니다.





1. Presentation Categories

(1) Workshop panel (90 minutes): 

Workshop panels address practical concerns and share immediately applicable suggestions on issues ranging from development of program, materials and resources to instructional activities and techniques to methods of assessment.

(2) Teaching materials exchange (20-minute presentation followed by Q & A and discussion): 

This category has been designed for audience choice and involvement. After a series of three or four short presentations, instead of having a brief Q&A after each presentation, 20 to 30 minutes are set aside to allow for audience members to have sufficient time to learn more about presentations of their choice. The presenters address the entire audience for 20 minutes each, and then move to designated areas to interact with interested subgroups. Each presenter is advised to bring his or her own laptop and other necessary materials for individual interaction with audience.

(3) Conference paper (20-minute presentation + 10-minute Q & A): 

This section of the meeting entails the presentation of research on topics pertaining to teaching and learning of Korean. Also, we expect explicit statement of the relevance of presented research to Korean program development and pedagogic practices. Mere description of instructional materials or practices without analysis of data, which would better fit the above category of teaching materials exchange, will not be considered for this category.


2. Requirements for Proposal or Abstract Submission

  • One must be a member of the AATK to submit a proposal/abstract.
  • All presenters must pre-register by April 15th, 2020 and be a member of the AATK. Otherwise, presenter names will NOT appear in the Printed Program.
  • All session chairs must register for the workshop and conference and be a member of the AATK.
  • All presentations must involve original materials, which have never been presented or published elsewhere.

(1) Workshop panel (90 minutes): The proposal should include a description of the topic and materials, objectives, and step-by-step plan for INTERACTIVE INVOLVEMENT OF PARTICIPANTS.

(2) Teaching materials exchange (20 minutes): Original and well-tested teaching materials or activities will be selected. The proposal should include a succinct description of target learners, objectives of instruction, the material or procedure, and its effects.

(3) Conference paper (20 minutes): The abstract should include clearly stated research motives and objectives in the context of existing research, description of data and analysis, and discussion of implications for teaching and future research.


3. Length: Maximum 500 words (English or Korean) + References or data limited to 250 words if applicable.


4. Limit of Submission: No more than 1 individual and 1 joint proposal/abstract, or 2 joint abstracts/proposals per person.

1.    학회 발표 유형

  1. 워크샵 (90): 프로그램수업 자료학습 활동평가 방법 개발 등과 관련된 보다 실질적인 내용을 중심으로 하는 워크샵적극적인 청중의 참여 유도 필수
  2. 교수자료 교환 (20): 20 교재 개발 발표에 이어 20-30분 정도의 청중이 개인 발표자에게 개별적으로 질문하고 더 심도 있는 토론을 하는 분임 토론 분과로 구성.
  3. 연구 논문 (30): 한국어 학습과 교육 관련 학술적 연구 발표연구 동기데이터 수집, 연구 분석  결과에 대한 토론 포함 필수.

2.    초록 제출 시 유의 사항

  • 발표 신청은 AATK 회원이어야만 가능
  • 모든 발표자는 AATK 회원이어야 하며 2020년 4 15일까지 연례 학회 선등록 필수.
  • 회원가입과 선등록이 마감 날짜까지 이루어지지 않을 경우 학회 프로그램에서 발표자 이름 제외세션 담당자들도 AATK 회원이어야 하며 연례 학회 등록 필수.
  • 모든 발표는 독창적인 연구여야 하며 타 학회에서 발표했거나 학술지 등에 이미 게재된 논문은 제외합니다.

3.    길이영어 또는 한국어로 최대 500어절 + 참고문헌 250어절

4.    초록 제출 개수 제한한 사람 당 2개까지만 제출 가능단독 발표 1개와 공동 발표 1개 또는 2개의 공동 발표 가능.
