2017 NEWL Administration Information & 2016 NEWL Professional Development Seminar
American Councils (AC) is seeking interested Korean language programs for participation in the 2017 administration of Korean language proficiency assessment, developed as part of AC’s multi-language special portfolio for “critical” world languages.
A joint academic project of American Councils and the College Board, the National Examinations in World Languages (NEWL™): Korean assessment is intended for heritage and non-heritage secondary school students. NEWL score reports along with a certificate will be released in July and may be forwarded at the student’s request to colleges and universities for advanced placement or credit by exam purposes.
The administration of the NEWL: Korean is scheduled for April 28, 2017. Registration for the exam closes on Friday, March 31, 2017. The NEWL: Korean exam fee is $93, which includes the online portion of the exam and the cost of the speaking and writing assessments by ACTFL/LTI. Test Centers/ schools will receive a $9 refund per student to defray the cost of administering and proctoring the exam.
A reduced exam fee of $53 is also available to those students who qualify. For each exam taken with a fee reduction, the test center/ school will be refunded $4 per student. Students participating in the 2017 administration of the NEWL: Korean will receive a final grade report and will have one score report sent to a college or university of their choosing.
Additionally, AC is also offering a weekend Professional Development Seminar for teachers of Korean. The workshop will be held at American Councils’ office in Washington DC, on October 22-23, 2016.
The NEWL assessments are standards and proficiency-based and reflect today’s best practices in language assessment. During the two-day seminar, participants will gain an understanding of the core design and content of the proficiency-based NEWL assessments, as they relate to course curriculum, exam content, online administration and scoring. Special attention will be given to incorporate local conditions into the design and planning of proficiency-based curriculum, as teachers gain an understanding of and experience with the four sections of the exam. Upon completion of the seminar, participants will receive a certificate of participation and of qualification to administer National Examinations in World Languages (NEWL™) Series at their home schools.
Join a community of high school teachers and make further connections as you share your classroom culture, communicate across many topics, and compare best practices, creative ideas, innovative techniques and practical solutions.
Registration Fee: $250

Kindly note that travel and accommodations are participants’ responsibility.
