"The Supervisory Role of the Language Program Director: An Overview" -- Date & Time: Thursday October 22, 2:00-3:00pm CST

Facilitator: Susan Faivre, ESL Assistant Director & Writing Program Coordinator

This webinar provides a practical toolkit for program coordinators who are tracking progress of instructor responsibilities and observing and evaluating staff.  We will demonstrate set-up and integration of systems using synchronous cloud technology which will increase instructor accountability and create time-saving strategies for administrative tracking. Participants will also learn how to facilitate a multi-faceted observation and feedback system to identify areas for instructor improvement, enhance the reflective process, and implement strategies and support needed to adjust practice.

"Second/Foreign Language Teacher Training" -- Date & Time: Friday October 30, 3:00-4:00pm CST

Facilitator: Cassandra Rosado, Teaching Coordinator of the ESL Writing Program

This webinar will introduce basic strategies and components of effective language teacher training that may be necessary for a Second or Foreign Language Program Coordinator to facilitate or supervise. Participants will learn how to plan and implement an orientation for new language teachers and how to create an environment of on-going professional development throughout the academic year with weekly meetings and monthly seminars.

“Language Program Evaluation and Articulation” -- Date & Time: Friday November 6, 5:00-6:00pm CST

Facilitator: Charles Webster, Director of the Basic Language Program, Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures

In this webinar, we will examine proficiency frameworks, from not only a language-learning perspective, but also with regard to curricular implementation. We will discuss the importance of program articulation and evaluation and address ways in which language program directors can involve various stakeholders in the process. Participants will engage with examples of evaluation procedures and instruments and will identify evaluation and articulation needs in their own programs.

"Integrating Experiential Learning in the Language Curriculum" -- Date & Time: Thursday November 12, 9:00-10:00am CST

Facilitator: Ann Abbott, Director of Undergraduate Studies, Department of Spanish & Portuguese

Studies show that "Communities" is one of ACTFL's 5 Cs that students care most about, yet it is also the one that language program directors and instructors feel is most difficult to incorporate, so it is the most rarely implemented. In this webinar I will talk briefly about experiential learning in general and focus on community service learning (CSL) in particular: what it is and how to do it successfully in language course. The program administrators who feel it is challenging are not wrong, but the effort is well worth it!

All webinars are free. Registration is required. If you have any questions please feel free to contact Florencia Henshaw: henshaw2@illinois.edu.
