The FSLA at UNG: Opportunities for Students, Instructors, Tutors, and Counselors
Dear Friends of the UNG Federal Service Language Academy,
The
University of North Georgia (UNG) will host the third summer language
academy for high school rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors in June
and July 2013.The Federal Service Language Academy
(FSLA) is a three-week residential program for students who are
interested in an immersion intensive language experience, fitness, and
exploring international-related careers with the federal government.Last year, 117 students from over 28 US states and three foreign countries successfully completed the FSLA.
During
the two three-week sessions, students will be immersed in intensive
language instruction in First-Year Arabic, Chinese, Russian, French,
German, Korean, Portuguese or Second-Year Arabic, Chinese, Russian,
French, German, and Korean from highly qualified teachers, participate
in a daily fitness program, receive career counseling from federal
agency representatives (CIA, FBI, State Department, Homeland Security,
the Peace Corps and US Armed Forces), and possibly receive high school
credit for successful completion of the academy.

Performance Standards (GPS) in an immersion, target language only
approach
Date: Two cohort sessions of three-week duration. First Cohort: June 09-June 28; Second Cohort: July 07-July 26
Eligibility:A rising high school sophomore, junior, or senior (graduating seniors eligible for Portuguese)

Class Ratio: 16
students to one teacher; Two assistants (a counselor in charge of
supervision and fitness, and a tutor proficient in the target language)
will be assigned to each cohort language group.
Student Costs:$1895 which includes tuition, room and board, books and materials, and fees for field trips
Scholarship Information:The Center for the Advancement and Study of International Education (CASIE) will provide a limited number of partial scholarships based on need.Information about these scholarships is posted on the FSLA website. The Portuguese Flagship Program at UGA offers $500 partial pre-collegiate scholarships for the Portuguese module. To
be eligible, you must be a graduating senior, admitted to UGA, and have
submitted a Portuguese Flagship Program application, which can be found
athttp://www.lacsi.uga.edu/.
Two Field Trips Per Session: 1) Teacher directed and language specific (First Week); 2) A consolidated adventure trip for all students (Second Saturday)

What:Instructor, tutor, and counselor positions are available at UNG for the Foreign Language Service Academy (FSLA).We need outstanding, energetic, and dedicated individuals for our high school summer language academy.

Deadline for Instructor, Tutor, and Counselor Application: April 1, 2013
Instructor Requirements:1)
advanced to superior proficiency; 2) Successful teaching experience
with high school age students; 3) Experience with intensive language
programs; 4) Evidence of active, engaged teaching strategies appropriate
for high schools students in an intensive, three week language camp; 5)
Experience using State Performance Standards; and 6) Evidence of
successful integration of technology and culture into lessons.
Tutor Requirements:1) completed university 2000 level language courses or equivalency; 2) Experience working with high school age students.
Counselor Requirements:1)
Experience working with high school age students; 2) Evidence of
leadership skills; 3) Language study and camp experience are preferable.
Instructor Compensation:Free
room and board provided (if desired); $1000 per week ($6000 total for
two cohorts); Six days of instruction per week; 10 hours a day;
Additional activities and study time will be planned for evenings.
Tutor/Counselor Compensation:Free room and board provided; $1000 per cohort; On duty seven days a week.

not mandatory)
4) A statement of interest describing your teaching philosophy and the methodology you will use if selected for the FSLA.
